Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery Timeline

A Legacy Rooted in Niagara

Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery is the culmination of more than two centuries of Staff family history in the Niagara Peninsula. From the first vines planted in 1899 to a King's Medal in 2025, this is the story of one family's unbroken commitment to the land.

1800
Robert Staff emigrates from Lincolnshire, England to Upper Canada, beginning the Staff family's Canadian story.
1899
The Staff family plants their first vineyard — a 3.3-acre block of Concord grapes at the corner of what is now 17th Street and Staff Avenue in Jordan, Ontario. This original block still stands today.
1967
Lavelle Staff, Sue-Ann's grandfather, is crowned Grape King — one of Ontario's most prestigious honours in viticulture.
1971
Sue-Ann Staff is born in Niagara, the fifth generation of a family with deep roots in Ontario grape growing.
1994
Sue-Ann graduates from the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Biotechnology. Her father, Howard V. Staff, plants a block of Riesling in celebration — grapes that would go on to define the winery's signature style.
1996
Howard V. Staff is crowned Grape King, following in his father Lavelle's footsteps. That same year, Sue-Ann earns a graduate degree in oenology from Roseworthy College, University of Adelaide, Australia — one of the world's premier winemaking institutions.
2002
Sue-Ann is named Winemaker of the Year by the Ontario Wine Awards — the youngest recipient ever and the first woman to receive the honour.
2009
Sue-Ann launches her eponymous winery on the Staff family farm in Jordan, Ontario, in the heart of the Niagara Benchlands appellation.
2010
Sue-Ann's 2009 Robert's Block Riesling wins Gold at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Wine Competition, launching a long and distinguished record of national and international awards under the Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery label.
2014
Sue-Ann is awarded the Niagara Entrepreneur of the Year Emerging Business Award, recognizing her vision in building a world-class estate winery from the family farm.
2018
Sue-Ann receives the Tony Aspler Cuvee Award of Excellence, presented to the individual or institution that best furthers the aims and aspirations of Ontario's wine industry.
2025
Sue-Ann is awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal, recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to their province, territory, region, or community in Canada.

Sue-Ann Staff: One of Canada's Most Celebrated Female Winemakers

In a world long dominated by men, Sue-Ann Staff has spent decades proving that the finest wines in Canada can be made by a woman who grew up in the vineyards, studied winemaking on two continents, and returned home to build something extraordinary on her family's 200-year-old estate in Jordan, Ontario.

Today, Sue-Ann Staff is one of the most decorated and respected winemakers in the country — a pioneer for women in Canadian wine, and a passionate ambassador for the Niagara Benchlands appellation she calls home.

A Legacy Rooted in Niagara

Winemaking has been a lifelong ambition of Sue-Ann's, stemming from a family background in viticulture spanning five generations in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula — encompassing two "Grape King" titles. The Staff family has farmed this land since the early 1800s, when Sue-Ann's Great Great Great Grandfather Robert Staff first settled the property.

That deep connection to the land — to its soils, its seasons, and its singular terroir on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment — informs every wine Sue-Ann makes, from her celebrated Niagara Rieslings to her award-winning Icewines.

World-Class Education & Early Career

After completing her formal education in winemaking at the renowned Roseworthy College (University of Adelaide, South Australia) — one of the world's leading viticulture and oenology programs — Sue-Ann gained experience across multiple vintages abroad before returning to Niagara.

She went on to serve as Winemaster at Pillitteri Estates Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where she built her reputation as one of Canada's most talented and innovative winemakers.

Where Did Sue-Ann Staff Study Winemaking?

Sue-Ann's academic background laid the foundation for her achievements. During her Honors Horticulture and Biotechnology studies at the University of Guelph OAC '94 (B.Sc.(Agr.)), she became the first Canadian to achieve the "Top Undergraduate Research Paper" awarded by the American Society for Horticultural Science. In addition, she became the first Canadian elected President of the Association of Collegiate Branches for the American Society for Horticultural Science — involving all university horticulture clubs across North America.

A Graduate Degree in Oenology (1996) attained from the University of Adelaide, South Australia capped the formal instruction in winemaking. With experience from several other wineries including a trainee winemaking position with Simon Gilbert Wine Services in the Upper Hunter Valley, Australia, Sue-Ann returned home to Canada to begin her winemaking career in Niagara.

Winemaker of the Year — First Female Ever

In 2002, Sue-Ann was acclaimed Winemaker of the Year by the Ontario Wine Awards — the first female and youngest person ever to receive the honour at that time. This milestone recognition marked a turning point not just for Sue-Ann, but for women in Canadian wine.

She has since been named one of the top four Women in Wine in the World by the International Wine and Spirits Awards of London, England — twice.

600+ National & International Wine Awards

Over the course of her career, Sue-Ann has won more than 600 national and international wine awards — across competitions including Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge, International Wine & Spirits Competition, Texsom International Wine Awards, Ontario Wine Awards, and Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, among many others.

Her wines — including the iconic Robert's Block Riesling, Howard's Icewine Vidal, and Wisteria Tree Cab Franc Icewine — consistently earn medals at the world's most prestigious competitions.
