It Takes A Lot Of Beer... Sue-Ann in Food & Drink Magazine!

"It's true there's nothing better than a refreshing beer after a wet, dirty, hard day in the cellar," confirms Sue-Ann Staff, "but I find that after a beer or two, I'm ready for more wine."

We're hiring!

Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery is looking for a friendly, energetic part-time tasting room sales associate for weekends (Summer to Fall).

WE are a busy, quality-focused boutique winery located on Sue-Ann’s 210-year old family farm in Jordan, ON. We pride ourselves on offering guests a warm, authentic, and friendly winery experience. Whether our guests join us for a quick tasting or spend an hour enjoying a glass of wine in the sunshine, we strive to make everyone’s visit memorable and delicious.

YOU are a cheerful extrovert with a passion for Ontario wines, country air and making people happy. You are a team player with your Smart Serve certification and a valid driver’s license. You are interested in learning about Sue-Ann, her wines and history, as well as the Niagara peninsula and Twenty Valley, and sharing that knowledge with guests. You are as comfortable talking to a single guest as you are speaking to a group of 30 people. You can lift a 35lb wine case with ease and have no qualms about bringing it to a guest’s car. Finally, you are available on weekends (and, when necessary, some evenings or weekdays) and you love dogs.

If this description sounds like you, please forward your resume to info@sue-annstaff.com by 5 pm on July 21.

"Niagara Off The Lake" indeed!

The Featherstone sheep, photographed by Karen Black

Globe & Mail readers have been visiting the winery in droves this month, thanks to this charming piece by Big Barbara Ramsay Orr, published June 8.

"Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery

She’s a winemaker whose tasting rooms are in the dining room of her family farm, located partly on the Twenty Mile Bench and partly in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation. Her family has been in viniculture for five generations. Sue-Ann Staff has been named one of the top four “Women in Wine” in the world by the International Wine and Spirits Awards in London, twice. She’s also a pilot, and her winery is one of the only fly-in wineries in Canada, with two grass runways, and co-ordinates on the labels of her wines for pilots who want to fly in for a tasting. Rick Mercer and his crew landed here. Her Burmese Mountain dog, Brix, who, Staff complains, has more Twitter followers than she does, is Mr. January in the Winery Dogs of Ontario calendar. There’s a cat named Nuisance who’s usually around, too. On alternate weekends all summer at the winery, Zooma Farm Grill will be serving up oysters, sliders, ribs – food that Staff describes as “clever, regional and delicious.”

She has three new wines debuting in July: Foxy Pink Rosé, plus a riesling and a cabernet franc. In August, her Fancy Farm Girl Flamboyant Red, a Bordeaux blend that promises to be elegant easy drinking, will be available in the LCBO. And it’s always a good time for Fancy Farm Girl Flirty Bubbles, an award-winning sparkling rosé."

Thanks Barbara!

Well, HELLO Summer!

Okay, okay, it's still Spring for another month or so, but Victoria Day always feels like the start of Summer, don't you think? At the very least, it's the weekend when we dust off the bbq and garden furniture and get settled in for Summer entertaining.

On that note, if you need wine for the weekend, we're open 10-6 on Friday, Saturday and holiday Monday, and 11-6 on Sunday. May we suggest the following pairings to make your entertaining easier?

  • Grilled Pancetta-Wrapped Asparagus. Asparagus is in season and it is glorious! However, pairing this delicious perennial with wine can be challenging. Grilling the 'gus helps by adding a charry depth to the vegetable's fresh grassiness, while the additional salty meatiness of the pancetta makes this a perfect pairing with our luscious Riesling Loved By Lu, $17.95
  • Pork-Fennel Burger. There's something about juicy pork shoulder meat paired with black pepper and fennel in this Mark Bittman recipe that has us reaching for our shopping bags and a bottle (or two) of Baco Noir, $16.95. Plus, any recipe that starts out with the words "For this burger, you need fat" has got to be a winner ;)
  • Victoria Sponge. If, by Monday, you're feeling a little Anglophilia coming on and want to celebrate Victoria Day in style, a slice of this traditional British dessert and a flute of chilled Fancy Farm Girl Flirty Bubbles ($29.95) make for a perfect tribute.

If you can't make it to the winery this weekend, stop by your local LCBO to pick up a bottle or two of Fancy Farm Girl Frivolous White, (LCBO #:394072). Chill it well and serve with Bon Appetit's Garlic & Rosemary Grilled Chicken with Scallions.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing long weekend everyone!
