Merritt Island adventures on tap

A mini food festival will be taking place every Thursday this summer on Merritt Island.

Niagara-on-the-Lake based Silversmith Brewing Company has teamed with Welland’s Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA)  and the city to organize a series of events called Welland Supper Market, featuring live music, beer and wine from Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery as well as up to 20 vendors selling food and desserts.

The event to take place on the island from 4:30 p.m. to dusk every Thursday from June 16 to Aug. 25.

The event brings together food trucks, beer, wine and music in a “nice family-friendly lively event,” Silversmith’s communications director, Doug Blendell, said in an interview Wednesday.

He said the company organized a similar weekly event in Port Dalhousie last summer, which “was really successful.”

“It has been a very successful program in terms of the feedback we get from the community, and from the people who come out and participate,” he said. “People really look forward to it.”

The company hopes to attract as many as 2,000 people to each of the events!

Vendors would be located along the canal trail that runs along Merritt Island, north of the parking lot and playground.

“It’s obviously something that’s successful from the perspective of the vendors as well as the community,” he said.

2014 Robert's Block Riesling 92/100 Natalie MacLean

Reviews and Ratings

rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Sue-Ann staff is sometimes fondly referred to as the Riesling wizard of Niagara. She is not the only producer succeeding in quality riesling, but one would be hard pressed to find a more reliable producer. With Staff's Riesling, every year impresses.
This allotment of vines are older and low yielding. This means what little grapes the vine produces are more concentrated and flavourful.
Pale and youthful looking. Energizing and vibrant, this wine is very dry but fruity. Wonderful aromas of guava, lemon juice, key lime, apple sauce, honeysuckle, and slate.
The palate is zippy, but not so puckering it's unapproacheable. Lots of fresh citrus: lime, lemon, and tangerine. Guava, lemon, and pie apple on the finish.
A fabulous and ageable wine that would also go great with red snapper or a cobb salad.
$26.00...winery only!
